Industry Development Project Manager - The Whitsundays (12 Month Contract)

DR Tourism is seeking an experienced tourism industry professional to join our team on a full-time 1-year contract as the Project Manager of The Whitsundays Product and Industry Development Project.

The successful applicant will be based in Airlie Beach in the stunning Whitsundays.

We are looking for a dynamic individual to work with industry and key stakeholders, with the support of the broader DR Tourism and Tourism Whitsundays teams, to deliver the following outcomes within the project timeframe:

  • Assist DR Tourism with the development of a regional product and experience gaps analysis to determine where key opportunities and challenges lie for the Whitsundays.
  • Identify key opportunities for new land-based tourism experiences and food and agritourism experiences.
  • Assist existing operators (including the adventure/overnight sailing and backpacker sectors) who have previously catered for international markets almost exclusively, to diversify and tailor their experiences and their marketing strategies to suit better domestic markets.
  • Engage with operators and key stakeholders in the region.
  • Keep the local tourism sector informed and facilitate increased levels of involvement in beneficial opportunities that are available to tourism operators, including the Queensland Government's Tourism Industry Business Capability Program and Tourism and Events Queensland's Best of Queensland Experiences Program.
  • Work with the local tourism sector to establish a minimum of 3 new tourism experiences for the Whitsundays, ranging from food/agri-tourism, adventure and luxury niche markets.
  • Assist the local tourism sector to leverage local, state and federal grant opportunities.
  • Assist the local tourism sector to improve and tailor their customer service delivery to suit domestic audiences.
  • Educate the local accommodation sector on STR and increase the number of Whitsundays based accommodation providers leveraging this opportunity.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Mandatory: Experience in a tourism or stakeholder engagement related role
  • Mandatory: Computer literacy in at least Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), online booking platforms, etc.
  • Desirable: Tertiary qualifications in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications or a related field
  • Desirable: Experience in an industry/experience development tourism role
  • Desirable: Experience working in both the private and public tourism sector

  • Excellent relationship management skills
  • Strong and demonstrated tourism stakeholder engagement ability - experience working with key stakeholders across both the private and public sector
  • Passionate about tourism industry and experience development
  • Track record of developing and promoting new tourism experiences
  • Track record in mentoring and coaching tourism operators
  • Excellent communications skills - verbal and written

About the Project

The Whitsundays Product and Industry Development project is a Federal Government initiative that aims to empower and equip Whitsundays' tourism operators, particularly those who have previously been reliant on international markets, to diversify their products and experiences to better suit domestic markets. The project will also highlight gaps in the existing product offering and develop strategies and products to expand the experiences and attractions in the Whitsundays.
